When the Princess of Wales recently spoke at Colchester Hospital, she shared something that truly resonated:
“You put on a brave face through treatment. Then it’s done – and you think, right, I can crack on, get back to normal. But actually, that phase afterwards is really difficult.”
🔗 You can also watch the Princess’s powerful reflections on this often unseen phase of recovery below. Her words resonate with what many in our community feel but rarely voice aloud.
At HCCN, we couldn’t agree more. The Princess’s message of resilience and hope resonates deeply with us.
HCCN supports adults aged 18 and over in Huntingdonshire who are living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis. Not only during treatment, but also in the quieter moments that follow. When hospital visits slow down. When others assume you’re “better now.” When the invisible scars – fatigue, uncertainty, and change – begin to feel heavier than you expected.
That’s where our Buddy Scheme makes a difference.
💬 A gentle voice. A listening ear. Someone who has walked a similar path.
The Buddy Scheme pairs you with a trained volunteer who understands the rollercoaster of life during/after cancer treatment. It’s a space to talk, to feel heard, and to rediscover your rhythm. There’s no pressure. Just regular phone calls, at your pace, offering warmth and connection when it’s needed most.
Dr Amir Khan put it beautifully when reflecting on the Princess’s words:
“There’s this assumption that once you’ve finished treatment, you should be fine. But recovery isn’t linear, and that phase after can feel very lonely.”
You don’t have to face this journey alone.
Whether you’re recharging your energy, adapting to a new normal, or need someone to talk to about your feelings, our Buddy Scheme is here to support you.
💬 It’s for anyone facing the weight of a cancer diagnosis, whether you’ve just received the diagnosis, are undergoing treatment, or have completed it and are now deciding what’s next. There’s no perfect time to seek support, only the time that feels right for you.

📞 This support is free, confidential, and always provided with compassion.
💙 If this sounds like the kind of support you or someone you know might need, please get in touch or share.
