Our activities – nutrition
Proper nutrition is essential for cancer recovery as it can help maintain a healthy body weight, repair damaged tissues, boost the immune system, manage treatment side effects, and reduce the risk of recurrence. Nutrition is important for cancer recovery for several reasons:
Maintaining a healthy body weight: Cancer and cancer treatments can cause significant weight loss, which can weaken the body and make it more difficult to recover from the disease. Adequate nutrition can help maintain a healthy body weight and prevent further weight loss.
Building and repairing tissues: Cancer treatments can damage healthy cells and tissues in the body. Proper nutrition can provide the body with the necessary nutrients to repair damaged tissues and support the growth of new cells.
Boosting the immune system: Cancer treatments can weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections and other illnesses. A balanced and healthy diet can help boost the immune system, making it more effective at fighting cancer and preventing infections.
Managing side effects of treatment: Cancer treatments often have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which can make it difficult to eat and maintain proper nutrition. Eating a balanced diet that includes foods that are easy to digest and provide essential nutrients can help manage these side effects.
Reducing the risk of recurrence: Some studies suggest that a healthy diet and lifestyle may help reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and limiting processed and high-fat foods may help reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
